Press Release
Cloning Pregnancy Requires
Senate Action
FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 9, 2002
Contact
Don Nelson, Nevada LIFE, 775-530-0029
The following statement can
be attributed to Nevada LIFE President Don Nelson:

Claims
that an Italian
physician has a secluded
patient/subject who is
eight weeks pregnant
with a human clone
requires the United
States Senate to
immediately pass the
Brownback-Landrieu
cloning ban (Senate Bill
1899). This bill was
passed last summer in
the House of
Representatives by over
100 votes (H.R. 2505).
The president has said
that he will sign it.
Additional claims that
Chinese scientists have
cloned human embryos
using human DNA and
rabbit eggs along with
advances in both the
United States and Japan
using artificial wombs,
as well as other
research, are further
reason the Senate must
take action. The
prospects of human
embryo farms and
designer baby factories
are no longer bad
science fiction. The
future is now. Unless
cloning is banned, that
future may become a
post-human future.
These
events may be the reason
the President will
address cloning tomorrow
in the Rose Garden.
Alternative bills to
deal with human cloning,
S. 1893 supported by
Senator Harry Reid and
S. 1758 will not ban
human cloning at all.
They only ban the birth
of clones. They allow
the creation of human
embryos by cloning for
research but require
that they be destroyed.
It appears that if this
research has any mass
potential, it will
require millions of
cloned human embryos.
This legislation
therefore will not
hinder the birth of
clones, but make it much
easier to do. S. 1899 is
necessary to ensure that
bad science fiction does
not become reality in
America.
