LIFE applauds President
Bush’s comments today on
human cloning and his
call for a human cloning
ban on the grounds that
it is unethical,
unnecessary as well as
dangerous. Cloning is
dangerous not only to
clones, but to the women
who will provide the
millions and millions of
eggs necessary for
cloning due to drugs and
surgery necessary to
produce and recover
these eggs. This
research, even if
effective "would create
a massive national
market for eggs and egg
donor…." leading to the
"exploitation of women's
bodies." Cloning may
also be dangerous to
those who will bear
these clones. The New
Scientist is reporting
that the "mother could
be at a high risk of a
rare invasive womb
cancer."
Anything less than a
total ban on human
cloning will be
unenforceable. The
millions of cloned
embryos needed for such
mass production of
intended cures
guarantees that many
human clones will be
implanted for birth.
Senator Daschle’s
comments that such a ban
will stop life saving
research are baseless
and unfounded. There are
no current applications
to this kind of
research. There is large
number of current
applications to
alleviate and cure
diseases using adult
stem cells, umbilical
cord blood and other
stem cell research which
does not involve the
killing of a human life.
The public
overwhelmingly opposes
experimentation on
cloned humans. The Pew
Research Center reports
that 4 out of 5 oppose
experimental research on
human clones. With the
news that a woman is
eight weeks pregnant
with a cloned human, and
public support for a
human cloning ban, it is
time for the Senate to
pass Senate Bill 1899,
the Brown Back-Landrieu
Human Cloning
Prohibition Act.
