Judge
Refuses To Let Terri Schiavo Be Fed By Mouth
Ignores
New Evidence By 17 Leading Doctors
Congress
Must Pass Incapacitated Persons Law
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 11, 2005
The
Following Statement Can Be Attributed To Nevada LIFE
President
Don Nelson
Florida
Judge George Greer has denied a motion to allow Terri
Schiavo to be fed by mouth when her feeding tube is
disconnected again on March 18, 2005. He also
refuses to let the media observe and record Terri’s
interactions with her family. Greer has rejected
any further testing for Terri and rejected affidavits
from 17 new medical experts, including University of
Nevada Medical School Surgery Professor Harry Sawyer
Goldsmith. These doctors have said that Terri
should not be starved to death, is not a vegetable,
would be a good candidate for treatment and could be
greatly improved. Dr. Goldsmith says that
Schiavo looks like a strong woman who has been
neglected. Her husband has denied Terri any
treatment. He has also kept her in a dark room,
has not let her outside since 2000 and will not let
her listen to music or receive even a blessing from
her Bishop. These are just some of the reasons
the Florida Department of Children and Families have
finally asked for 60 days to investigate 30 detailed
allegations of abuse. Greer predictably said
that the department could not do its job and
investigate. Greer is weary of the case and
wants it to end.
Judge Greer’s obduracy and obstinacy is appalling.
Any judge presented with scientific evidence or
opinion that might exonerate a convict sentenced to
die in three weeks, three hours or three minutes
before execution would be expected to stay the
execution until that evidence could be examined since
death is involved. By ignoring evidence from leading
experts, some of whom are internationally recognized,
that Terri Schiavo is not in a persistent vegetative
state and could be rehabilitated, Judge Greer is
treating Terri with less regard than John Wayne Gacy
and Ted Bundy.
Greer’s
intransigence and disregard for Terri is the reason
that Congress must pass the Incapacitated Person’s
Legal Protection Act (HR 1151, S 539). The bill
would extend habeas corpus to incapacitated persons to
allow families like Terri’s to have her case
reviewed by a federal court. It adds another
layer of review to insure that no state may deprive
any incapacitated persons of their right to life
without due process or deny equal protection.
Nevada LIFE calls on Nevada’s Congressional
representatives and the Congress to pass this bill
immediately.
