Another Stem Cell Discovery Makes Embryo Stem Cell Research And Congressional Funding Bill Unnecessary.

Bush Funding Policy Is Working And Leading Scientists To New Discoveries

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 9, 2007

Researchers at Wake Forest University have discovered that stem cells from amniotic fluid have embryonic stem cell like qualities, but without the practical and moral difficulties.  This new stem cell find, along with other stem cell sources, is making embryonic stem cell research more and more irrelevant and a waste of precious resources.  This is especially true since embryonic stem cell research has failed to provide a single human benefit or cure.  Embryonic stem cells come from killing human embryos.  Amniotic stem cells come with the birth and gift of a baby.  There is no need for taxpayer funding of unproductive research that requires killing of human embryos.

This new discovery and the failure of embryonic stem cell research to create a single human cure or benefit requires the Congress to reject HR-3, The Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2007.  HR 3 would expand embryonic stem cell research and overturn President Bush’s embryonic stem cell funding policy. A vote is expected January 10th or 11th.

New developments in non-embryonic stem cell research using amniotic fluid, umbilical cord blood, stem cells from a person’s own body, placenta and other sources-all which do not destroy human life are astonishing, but largely unreported.  There have been over 72 benefits and cures developed through this kind of research with over 1000 human trials underway.  There are no embryonic human trials.

New funding of any kind, state or federal, is also unnecessary because Californians have voted to spend $3 Billion over the next ten years on embryonic stem cell research and cloning.

Despite criticism, the Bush policy of limiting federal funding for embryonic stem cell research has worked.  The president’s policy of protecting human life has advanced, not hindered science.  By limiting unethical embryonic stem cell research, scientists have been led to discover other stem cell sources-which appear to be superior, easier to use and are ethical.

Nevada LIFE applauds researchers all over America who use their talents to discover many ethical stem cell sources and therapies.  We applaud President Bush for not caving to “political” science.  He has prevented America from an irreversible venture into human experimentation.
